ICC Under-19 World Cup: Indian team led by Unmukt Chand lifts U-19 cup

The Indian under-19 cricket team won its third ICC U-19 World Cup title today after beating Australia in the final by six wickets. Captain Unmukt Chand scored an unbeaten 111 to seal the victory.

The final Under-19 World Cup match was played at Tony Ireland stadium, Townsville Australia on Sunday, August 26.

This is the third time India’s U-19 team won the World Cup. Previously, it had lifted the Cup in 2000 and 2008.

Chand’s unbeaten century in partnership with Smit Patel -- who scored an unbeaten 62 runs -- helped India win the finals comfortably. Together, Chand and Patel scored130 runs in their unbroken partnership to take India’s total to 227 with six wickets and 14 balls to spare.

Chand was declared Man of the Match in the India-Australia U-19 World Cup finals.

India won the toss and elected to field first.

Australia set a target of 225 runs with its first innings. Australian William Bosisto had the highest score in the team – an unbeaten 82 runs off 120 balls.

But right-arm medium pacer Sandeep Sharma kept the Australian score low by taking four wickets with his bowling performance.

Sharma’s bowling statistics were the most impressive among the Indian U-19 bowlers. He delivered a total of 10 overs with 2 maidens and had an economy rate of 5.40.

Among the Indian batsmen, opener Prashant Chopra was knocked out in the 7th ball but Chand who opened India’s innings with Chopra was unbeaten until the end.

Chand scored his century in 126-balls and delivered 5 smashing sixes and 7 fours. He delivered another six in his 111 runs. Patel scored 62 runs off 82 deliveries
