One of India’s largest IT firms, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is taking 60 UK students as interns at TCS this year. The initiative will help boost UK graduates’ employment prospects.

The training for the UK students is part of the Study India Program (SIP) 2012, a UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI).

In addition to the 60 students interning at the IT division, a further 42 students will work with other Tata companies.

Such initiatives will help steer students and young trainees in the right direction and make the right career choices, said Lynda Gratton, professor of Management Practice at the London Business School.

The UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) started in April 2006 with the aim to boost educational links between India and the UK. The programme will run until 2016 and will intensify bilateral exchanges at all levels so that India and the UK become natural partners in education to shape a better world.

The latest placement will provide students with a valuable and transferrable work experience as well as a global perspective on career opportunities.

Partnerships with global businesses remain a strategic priority for the UK in its plans for economic development. “I welcome the time and effort the company is investing in this and encourage other private sector organisations to do the same,” said Martin Davidson, British Council chief executive.

TCS has over 243,000 of the world’s best-trained consultants in 42 countries. The company generated consolidated revenues of $10.2bn for year ended March 31. TCS is the latest Indian company to open opportunities for UK interns. Other companies including Wipro and HCL have also offered to train UK students.
