Kochadaiiyaan, in Tamil means a king with thick, curly long hair. It also refers to a seventh century Pandya king called Kochadaiyan Ranadhiran who fought battles against the Chola dynasty.
The movie’s first look and teaser shows Rajinikanth donning the title role with opulent costume and distinct hair-do. Although inspired by his looks in the film Thalapathi, the latest film shows Rajinikanth in a whole new avatar.
The film’s teaser starts with the words, “There are heroes… There are superheroes… But there is only one Rajinikanth” introducing the legendary actor who is seen battling in an empire in the teaser.
The film also apears to be heavy on hi-tech computer graphic images and performance capturing technology used in big Hollywood projects such as Avatar. The film’s budget is 125-crore-rupees and the distributors describe Kochadaiiyaan as a “photorealistic film” as it takes viewers on a visual ride not experienced before.
The teaser also shows Rajinikanth in a youthful appearance – the effect that was achieved by creating a 3D scan of the Tamil superstar and then correcting scars and tightening the skin on the 3D model to make him look younger.
The music of Kochadaiiyaan is composed by maestro AR Rahman and will be released in October 2013. The music album includes one soundtrack sung by the legendary actor himself.
The short one-and-a-half minute video focuses only on thalaivaa Rajinikanth and does not introduce the rest of the cast members which includes Deepika Padukone. The teaser touched 200,000 views within 24-hours of its release on YouTube.
Kochadaiiyaan is the latest film from India to have more than 100-crore budget and joins other two upcoming superhero/ action thriller films – Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3.
In addition to India, the film is likely to have special screenings in London and in Los Angeles.
