Sports minister felicitates Indian medal winners of London Olympics

After a grand homecoming for the Indian athletes after their performance at London 2012 Olympic Games, the Olympics medal winners were honoured by Ajay Maken, the Union minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, on Thursday, August 16, 2012.

Indian athletes won a total of six medals at London 2012 Olympics -- two silver and four bronze medals -- making the London Games India’s finest performance at an Olympic event.

The minister felicitated and presented the cash awards to the six medal winners at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, the Indian capital.

The function was attended by medal winners along with their parents and all other Indian athletes, Indian and foreign coaches, who participated in London 2012 Olympic Games.

After the function, all the medal winners along with other Olympians marched to India Gate in open Jongas to pay floral tributes at Amar Jawan Jyoti, the site of the Indian Army’s Tomb of soldiers.

Silver medalist Vijay Kumar has been promoted to the role of Subedar Major by the Indian Army to honour his performance at London 2012 Games.
