Daily Mail is known to frequently cover Bollywood celebrities. But when it failed to recognise Deepika Padukone and called her a 'female companion' of tennis ace Novak Djokovic in a recent article, Deepika fans mocked the British tabloid. Daily Mail later amended the article to mention Deepika Padukone as a top Bollywood actress.

On March 9th, Daily Mail published the article spotting Novak Djokovic leaving the upmarket restaurant 'The Nice Guy' with Deepika Padukone but termed the top Bollywood star as Novak's "female companion" and referred to her as a "leggy brunette" further down in the article.

But following mockery, criticism and sheer ridicule by Deepika's admirers especially Indians on Twitter, Daily Mail amended the article on March 10th to address Deepika as "Bollywood star". It even included a section about the Bajirao Mastani actor's Bollywood stint including the number of awards she has won. It also mentioned Deepika's upcoming Hollywood debut xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Deepika is currently in Los Angeles busy filming for xXx alongside top names including Vin Diesel and Samuel L Jackson.

Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywood's most successful actresses of the recent times is also the second most popular celebrity on Twitter with 13.8 million followers, closely followed by Priyanka Chopra with over 13 million followers.

Deepika's dinner appointment with Novak is a result of the actress's love for tennis and badminton and as the daughter of Indian badminton ace – Prakash Padukone. Meanwhile, Novak is married to his long time sweetheart and has a 17-month old baby. Deepika has previously been clicked with another tennis superstar Rafael Nadal when he was in India.

One fan tweeted in disbelief: "How can a UK daily fail to recognise a known celebrity like Deepika Padukone… Poor general knowledge," while another said, "Deepika Padukone is simply gorgeous and famous. Ignorant foreign media. Hope you will do your homework better next time." A more cynical fan tweeted: So, for Daily Mail, Deepika Padukone is just another leggy brunette. And they say Bollywood actors have come of age with global appeal."

Deepika looked chic during her dinner meeting with Novak where she wore a simple black and white printed frock, stilettos, light trench coat and bright red lipstick.
