Last year, Londoners marked the 70th Indian Independence celebrations at Osterley Gymkhana. The special occasion featured the biggest Indian flag painting. Last year, visitors had to register for a free ticket to participate in the celebrations. London’s Osterley Indian Gymkhana Club is known to host one of the grandest Indian Independence Day celebrations in the UK every year but in 2016 it got even bigger and grander with the biggest ever Indian flag painting event. This year, the club is not celebrating 71st Independence Day, instead Indians will congregate in Kensington at the Bhavan on Thursday.

2016 Independence Day Celebration Details below:

In 2016, the open and free celebratory event for Indian diaspora, NRIs and anyone interested in the event was organised by the Indian community organisations in UK, in coordination with Indian Gymkhana Club and UKABC. The Sunday, Aug 21 celebrations was on from 10am to 4.30pm at the Indian Gymkhana Club grounds.

While in previous years visitors could just walk in, in 2016, guests had to register and take a copy of their ticket to the venue for entrance because of limited available places. One of the highlights included the public participation painting of “Biggest Indian Flag Ever Painted” acknowledged by Guinness Book of World Record.

In addition, the event featured regular Indian cultural programmes, flag-hoisting ceremony, national anthem, Indian arts and books stalls, and Indian sweet, savoury and food stalls.
