Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who has a huge diasporic fan following in the UK, has given his British fans another special reason to cheer – with a witty and inspiring speech as he received a honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland for his contribution to cinema and for his philanthropic work.

Dr. Shah Rukh Khan gave a very witty speech from his Bollywood career to loud cheers from audience

Bollywood Baadshah, known as SRK, said he was "extremely extremely humbled" by the  Edinburgh University's recognition, wittily saying it inspired him to work harder so that he felt he deserved it at least "in retrospect".

Edinburgh University honoured SRK for his philanthropic and cinema contributions

"My speech today is about Life Lessons at the Edinburgh University and my biggest learning is 'Life is the only Miracle'," SRK said on Twitter.

The University Chancellor HRH The Princess Royal in Edinburgh awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa for his outstanding record of philanthropy, altruism and humanitarism.

At the end of the speech, Khan even jigged to his ever-popular Lungi dance, to thundering appreciation from the audience and fans.

SRK's British honour comes just days before his special birthday – 50th – on November 1st.

According to the university, Dr. Shah Rukh Khan, one of Bollywood’s most popular stars, gave a public lecture at the University's New College and spoke after receiving an honorary degree from the University's Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal.

Some of his witty one-liners that resonated well with his audience included:

Madness (of the particularly nice/romantic kind) is an absolute prerequisite to a happy and successful life. Don’t ever treat your little insanities as if they are aberrations that ought to be hidden from the rest of the world. Acknowledge them and use them to define your own way of living the only life you have. All the most beautiful people in the world, the most creative, the ones who led revolutions, who discovered and invented things, did so because they embraced their own idiosyncrasies. There’s no such thing as “normal”. That’s just another word for lifeless.

I want to let you all know that how important your today… your now is. Study hard. Work hard. Play harder.

“Hindi filmon ki tarah life mein bhi, anthmein sab kuch theek ho jaata hai. Aur agar na ho, toh woh anth nahi hai…picture abhi baaki hai mere doston.” Take it as the only truth you need to know. Take it and believe it because the most unlikely to make it in Bollywoood is telling you this…the most romantic hero who doesn’t look anything like chocolate or taste like it.

Now all you bored professors out there in the first row, come on up: let's do the Lungi Dance!
