Playback singer Chinmayi's social media abusers held by cyber police

Playback singer Chinmayi Sripada, famous for her songs in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films, filed a complaint against a few men for sexual harassment on Twitter and two men including one professor have been arrested by the police after they confessed to the crime.

The 28-year-old singer, in her police complaint, said that some men have been harassing her on social media site Twitter with hate messages and threats to “kill, rape and assault” her. she added that they have been abusing her mother too and alleging thast she is against the Indian Tamil community.

The cyber crime cell have so far held Saravana Kumar Perumal, a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) professor and A Radhamanian, a district collector at a Tamil Nadu district. both men have owned up to the crime.

An avid Twitter user herself, Chinmayi tweeted: “I urge girls and their parents to take help from authorities if they are facing a problem.”

Chinmayi, who is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, lives in Chennai. She rose to fame in 2002 with the song Oru Deivam Thanda Poove from the critically-acclaimed film Kannathil Mutthamittal starring R Madhavan and Simran. She has sung in popular Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films such as Vinnaithandi Varuvaya, Vettai, Sri Rama Rajyam, Ye Maaya Chesave and Ekk Dewana Tha.

She is one of the first female playback singers to launch an iTunes and Android marketplace apps for her work.
