India’s grand slams hopes were crushed as Leander Paes and his men’s doubles partner Radek Stepanek crashed out in the mens doubles semi-finals at Wimbledon 2013 as did Rohan Bopanna and his partner in the same stage.

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza lost in the mixed doubles match at Wimbledon 2013 in the quarter final stage. Mirza was India’s only woman representative.

Fourth seeded Paes and his Czech partner Stepanek beat eleventh-seeded Frenchman Julian Benneteau and his Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic to enter the semi-final stage but lost to Ivan Dodig from Croatia and Marcelo Melo from Brazil in the game lasting almost three hours. The Croat-Brazilian finished 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Paes is India’s highest Grand Slam title winner with 13 trophies, six of which are for mixed doubles. Last year, Paes and his mixed doubles partner Elena Vesnina entered Wimbledon finals but narrowly lost out Americans Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond.

Bopanna and partner Eduoard Roger-Vasselin lost a five-set battle to American top seeded brothers Bob and Mike Bryan. This was Bopanna’s first take at semi-finals in Wimbledon.
