British NRI Sunil Chopra becomes Mayor of London borough of Southwark

British NRI Sunil Chopra has been appointed as the Mayor of London borough of Southwark. Chopra, a Labour party member, becomes the first and only Indian-origin councilor in Southwark where Indians account for 1.5% of the total population.

NRI Chopra is the Secretary of Indian Overseas Congress – the organisation that safeguards interests of Indians settled in the UK.

Chopra will start his Mayoral duties from Saturday, June 7. The UK-based Indian’s Mayor role comes after his re-election on May 22. Last year, he was elected Southwark borough’s deputy mayor.

He has lived in Southwark for 32 years and is the president of the Southwark Hindu Centre. He is passionate about helping senior citizens and providing training and job opportunities for young unemployed people, according to his political party Labour.  

Chopra was born and brought up in Delhi. Before moving to Britain, he was the first president of College of Vocational Studies in Delhi. During his university days he was also the vice president of Youth Congress Delhi and was president of NSUI (National Students' Union of India), Delhi.
