SIIMA 2013 film awards held at Sharjah, UAE with Shriya Saran as co-host

SIIMA 2013, the South Indian International Movie Awards was held on 12th and 13th September 2013 at Expo Centre Sharjah in UAE with actors Shirya Saran, Arya, Rana Daggubati and Sonu Sood co-hosting the event’s “Popular Awards” sections.

Now in its second year, SIIMA awards event creates an international platform for South Indian cinema and its movie stars. It awards excellence in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema.

Earlier in August, Rana Daggubati announced on Twitter that he is “looking forward” to the event after he participated in SIIMA 2013 awards’ press conference in Dubai along with co-hosts Shriya Saran and Arya.

Daggubati, rumoured to be actress Trisha’s boyfriend, is currently filming for project Bahubali in Hyderabad. Meanwhile Shriya Saran was last seen in Midnight’s Childrenthe screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel by the same name. Saran celebrated her 31st birthday on September 11, just a day before the SIIMA awards kicked off in Sharjah.

While the winners of SIIMA awards were decided by public vote, a panel of experts chose the final nominees for film fans to vote.

Dhanush bagged the best actor role for his performance in the film 3 and Hansika Motwani won the best actress award for Oru Kal Oru Kannadi. Kajal Agrawal took home the critics choice best actress trophy for her role in Thuppakki. Kumki was named the best film at SIIMA 2013. Dhanush's 3 also won an award for "innovative marketing" while actresses Asin and Shruti Hassan won in the next-gen awards category.

SIIMA 2013 nominations

In Tamil cinema, 2012 films such as Thuppakki, 3, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, Neerparavai, Maattrraan, and Pizza lead the nominations. Actors including Vijay, Dhanush and Suriya have been nominated in the Best Actor category while actresses such as Shruti Hassan, Hansika Motwani, and Kajal Aggarwal have made it to the final nominations of the Best Actress category.

From Malayalam movies, films including Ustad Hotel, Diamond Necklace, and Ee Adutha Kaalathu made it to the final nomination. Meanwhile, Telugu superhits including Julai, Eega, Businessman and Ishq have earned a place in the final nominations.

All the nominations were open for public voting on SIIMA’s website.

The 2013 SIIMA awards night was also an evening of star-studded entertainment with A-list celebrities lined up to perform at the show. South Indian cinema’s popular artists including Hansika Motwani, Shruti Hassan, host Shriya Saran, and seasoned artist Usha Uttap will enchant the audience with their performances.

In addition to awarding excellence in 2013 South Indian cinema, SIIMA also honoured Vinaithaandi Varuvaaya actress Trisha Krishnan for her ten years of contribution to the industry. Trisha Krishnan [pictured in a blue evening dress alongside SIIMA hosts and other South Indian film actors.

Guests attending the awards function included actresses Sridevi and Asin and actor Mohan Lal among others. 

SIIMA awards 2013 will be telecast on Sun Network but the date of the telecast is yet to be announced.
