Going beyond cash donations! Maharashtra Mandal London takes unique initiative to help Indian farmers
MML is collaborating with APULKEE Samajik Sanstha in Pune to support suicidal farmer’s family by providing them means/tool to earn their livelihood on their own in this difficult situation of their life. The association will support the Pune organisation and provide Maharashtrian farmer families with sewing machines and flour mills to enable them to work and earn consistent livelihood throughout their lives. "This is same like enabling and teaching them to fish instead of giving fish for single meal. We appeal all of you to come forward and support this campaign exclusively for suicidal famer’s family by sponsoring items of their wish. We will make sure that their sponsored tool/instrument reaches to the needy one," MML's newsletter read.
Apulkee team has already provided 4 flour mills and 2 sewing machines to widows of suicidal farmer’s family and these six families are earning Rs. 150 to 200 per day, enough to fulfill their family's basic needs (see Image1). This initiative has given these distressed families hope for life, confidence and the motivation to get ahead in life on their own. "Looking at the confidence it builds and benefit it drives for families in need, we are willing to take this on a large scale," says MML.
A flour mill costs Rs. 23000 (approximately £230) whereas sewing machine costs Rs. 7000 (about £70). According to the London-based UK Indian association, sponsoring one item will allow donours tol safeguard and set future for one family to stand on their own.
"This will be a real gift and true celebration of "bringing light and joy" in their family. You may gift it on your own, on the occasion of your or someone’s birthday, in memory of your dear one or group of friends or your organization can also participate in this. Name of sponsoring person, cause or reason for which you are sponsoring, group of people or sponsoring organization’s name will be painted on the gifted item. You will be notified with details of benefited family," adds MML.
