The film was produced for an extravagant budget of $100m – to put this in context, James Cameron’s 2009 3D film Avatar was produced on a budget of $237m.
Life of Pi is a story about a 16-year-old boy named Pi Patel from Pondicherry who survives a sinking freighter that kills everyone else. It tracks Pi's survival for more than 200 days as well as his adventures and bonding with a Bengal tiger, a zebra, kangaroos, an orangutan and a hyena.
The short 2-minute trailer captures audience’s imagination by showing a young Pi surviving a shipwreck by jumping into the Pacific ocean and then getting hold of a life boat. He then emerges in a far-fetched island of golden sun, sand and water. Pi then fights a tiger for his survival and is shown surviving alongside wild beasts and then befriending them. There are also glimpses of Pi’s happy life before he got lost.
One of the highlights of the trailer is a huge illuminated dolphin making an appearance.
The film also features other acclaimed Bollywood actors including Tabu who plays Pi’s mother and Irrfan Khan who plays the adult character of Pi. Other actors in the film are Adil Hussain, Shravanthi Sainath, Rafe Spall and Gerard Depardieu.
The audience have already given the trailer of 3D film Life of Pi a resounding welcome on YouTube. Many have said that they have read and loved the book and are looking forward to the release of the film later this year.
