A regeneration project of Havelock in Southall will create hundreds of job opportunities for plumbers, electricians, site secretary and quantity surveyor. A London housing association Catalyst Housing working with the local council has already registered interest in the roles from the people around.

Catalyst hosted an event earlier in June to highlight the hundreds of new employment opportunities coming to Havelock in Southall, predominantly an Asian-dominated area of West London.

According to the housing association, in addition to full-time and part-time work, Catalyst will also help young people kick-start their careers – with apprenticeships. During the course of the regeneration there will be 50 apprentice opportunities in a variety of roles as well as numerous work experience vacancies, it said.

Working in partnership with Ealing Council, Ealing College, Southall JCP, GOYA, and Connexions, the event saw more than 60 people register their interest. Jobs on offer included site secretary, quantity surveyor, electrician, plumber and many more roles starting later this summer.

The redevelopment of Havelock will create an exciting, mixed tenure community in the heart of Southall. In November 2013 Ealing Council’s planning committee approved Catalyst’s proposal to create 904 new homes.

Plans for the estate include providing a mix of new houses and flats for rent, shared ownership and sale, a new community centre and shops, a redesigned canal-side area and open spaces and activities and opportunities for young people

Work has started and it is expected that all the homes will be completed by 2025.

Anna Okwu, a resident of Havelock who is interested in being a site secretary said:

“I’m really excited about the regeneration. At the moment I work part-time as a carer for disabled people. I would really love a full-time job as the site secretary, during this time of recession the job security would be a life changer for me.”

Hibo Hirey, advisor and project coordinator at Catalyst Housing said:

“The regeneration of Havelock is going to improve people’s lives. Not only will they have beautiful new homes that meet current living standards but with the increase of jobs it will give young people and families’ new opportunities.

It was encouraging to see such a strong turnout of young people interested in the apprenticeships.’
