The London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony was held at the Olympic stadium in Stratford, London. Here are some of the show's highlights in pictures.

Directed by British film-maker Danny Boyle, the £27m opening ceremony titled “Isles of Wonder” celebrated British history, culture, multi-cultural spirit among others.

The opening ceremony included a short Punjabi track composed by Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman.

The event began at 9pm BST and the high-profile attendees included the Queen, other members of the Royal family including Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prime Minister David Cameron and wife Samantha and other international political delegates.

The London 2012 opening ceremony theme celebrated British heritage and culture. The event featured a tribute to the industrial revolution, the NHS, Great Ormund Street Hospital, British countryside, British music, modern Britain and British inventions. It featured prominent British personalities including James Bond (Daniel Craig), the Queen, David Beckham, Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson), Sir Tim Berners-Lee – the inventor of World Wide Web - and celebrated author J.K. Rowling.
